A Child's Ear-Piercing Procedure and What to Expect

Omaha Childrens Clinic in Omaha, NE, explains that you should consult with your child's pediatrician before getting your child's ears pierced.  You can wait and leave this decision up to the child when they are older but some families have cultural or personal reasons to have their baby's ears pierced earlier.  At Omaha Childrens Clinic we pierce ears age 6 months and older.

It is helpful to know that if you wait to do ear-piercing till school age, there may be a higher risk for infection because your child is around other children, and children do not practice the best hygiene.  Some children seldom wash their hands and they may touch their newly pierced ears.  If you decide to get your infant's ears pierced, you have complete control over the necessary hygiene to prevent infection. After piercing we recommend to clean your child's earlobes as directed twice daily. School-age children may make this routine challenging.

  • Most children cry during this procedure regardless of age because there is an element of stinging.
  • Turning the earrings a few times daily, is recommended
  • Do not change the earrings for at least six weeks after piercing.

Before having your child's ears pierced, do not invest in cheap earrings or earrings made of metal because these can cause allergy issues and prevent faster healing. We provide surgical plastic earrings as there is a lesser risk of allergy and infection.

The doctor's office is the most sanitized environment, versus a retail store or tattoo establishment, but not all doctor's offices will pierce ears, and most who do require you to be their patient.
